The Elbchaussee became famous as the street of wealthy Hamburg merchants and shipowners. In the magnificent country estates on the banks of the Elbe between Altona and Blankenese, Hamburg's standing in the world was defined and put on display. Their upper-class lifestyle forms the heart of the Elbchaussee legend. Many of the houses still stand. Some have been lavishly restored and repurposed as shipping offices, elegant hotels and restaurants, and museums open to the public.

Svante Domizlaff wuchs in einem großbürgerlichen Elternhaus an der Elbchaussee auf. Er kennt viele Familien und das gesellschaftliche Leben an Hamburgs großer Straße. Das hier gewonnene Vertrauen ermöglichte ihm den Zugang auch zu Häusern, die lange verschlossen waren. Nach der Schulzeit im Staatlichen Internatsgymnasium Schloss Plön und Auslandsjahren in Südafrika und Kanada begann er seine berufliche Laufbahn als Volontär bei der Fachzeitschrift Die Yacht. Später arbeitete er als Redakteur, Reporter und in Chefredaktionen der Verlage Axel Springer und Gruner + Jahr. Seit 1979 schreibt er Bücher mit den Schwerpunkten Regional-, Unternehmens- und Familiengeschichte sowie maritime Themen.
Michael Zapf wurde 1965 in Hamburg geboren und ist seit 1983 als freischaffender Fotojournalist für Zeitungs- und Buchverlage sowie für Pressestellen von Hamburger Unternehmen und Institutionen tätig. Seine Fotografien wurden in zahlreichen Bildbänden zu Hamburger und norddeutschen Themen veröffentlicht.
