Band 10 bietet einen Überblick über innovative und spezielle Bereiche der Biotechnologie. In den übrigen Bänden von Biotechnology werden sehr viele größere Bereiche der Biotechnologie unter bestimmten übergeordneten Gesichtspunkten beschrieben - Band 10 widmet sich den spezielleren Teilgebieten.Zu den vorgestellten Gebieten, denen man eine große zukünftige Bedeutung voraussagt, zählen Nanobiotechnologie, bioelektrochemische Brennstoffzellen, Bakterienrhodopsin und andere Substanzen, die als Informationssysteme in Frage kommen.Es werden ferner kleinere Fachgebiete behandelt, die - obwohl derzeit oft weniger beachtet - bereits größere Bedeutung haben, wie Marine Biotechnologie, Biotechnologie in der Phytopathologie, Biotechnologie mit Extremophilen, Biotechnologie mit Protozoen.Mit Band 10 hat der Leser die Möglichkeit, sich in diese und weitere spezielle Gebiete der Biotechnologie einzuarbeiten, wobei die gewohnt umfassenden und guten Literaturhinweise eine weitere Vertiefung der Themen erleichtern.
