Pierre Fermat est l'une des figures majeures des mathématiques. Au XVIIe siècle, son oeuvre se distingue par la diversité des champs qu'elle couvre. Novateur en théorie des nombres et en analyse diophantienne, Fermat ne l'était pas moins dans les disciplines géométriques. Mais, si ses travaux en théorie des nombres ont été l'objet de nombreuses analyses, aucune étude n'a jamais embrassé l'ensemble des méthodes et des théories géométriques qu'il a inventées.
Cet ouvrage entend combler cette lacune et fournir une étude de référence consacrée à l'ensemble des travaux géométriques de Fermat. On y montre comment, en partant des traditions géométriques grecques, arabes et latines, Fermat a pu contribuer aux débuts modernes des disciplines géométriques, offrant ainsi une compréhension plus informée et plus fine de l'histoire de plusieurs chapitres des mathématiques classiques.

Fermat and the modern beginnings of geometry
Pierre Fermat is one of the key figures in mathematics. In the seventeenth century, Fermat's work is characterized by the variety of the fields it covers. Innovative in number theory and diophantine analysis, so it is in geometrical disciplines. But, while Fermat's work in number theory has been the subject of numerous publications, no study has yet been conducted on all his geometrical methods and theories.
This book aims to fill this gap and to provide a benchmark study devoted to the entire geometrical work of Fermat. It shows how, starting from Greek, Arabic and Latin traditions, Fermat has contributed to the modern beginnings of geometrical disciplines. Thus it offers a deep and informed understanding of several chapters of classical mathematics.
