Stefan Zweig war einer der produktivsten und auch erfolgreichsten europäischen Literaten des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die Wahrnehmung seiner Texte ging weit über den deutschsprachigen Raum hinaus, so wurden seine Bücher in mehr als 50 Sprachen übersetzt und erreichten eine imposante Anzahl von Auflagen. Stefan Zweig war Intellektueller und Kosmopolit und damit ein Symbol nicht nur für das 'alte Österreich', sondern auch für das 'alte Europa'. Als Jude und Pazifist, Europäer und Weltbürger wurde er in den Jahren nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg weder in seinem Heimatland Österreich noch in Deutschland besonders geschätzt. Den Bemühungen einzelner Verehrer ist es zu verdanken, dass Leben und Werk Stefan Zweigs wieder sichtbar geworden sind und inzwischen im Zentrum wissenschaftlichen und auch bildungsbürgerlichen Interesses stehen. Dieser Band ist im Zusammenhang mit den vielfältigen Reflexionen über Stefan Zweig zu verstehen, die in den letzten Jahren erfolgt sind. Anknüpfend an eine Tagung inBerlin stellen die Beiträge explizit den europäischen Gedanken in den Vordergrund, der sich im Leben und Werk von Stefan Zweig spiegelt und hier auf verschiedenen Ebenen untersucht wird.Stefan Zweig was one of the most productive and successful literary figures of the years between the First and Second World Wars. This volume is to be viewed in the context of the many reflections on Zweig which have appeared in recent years. The essays, based on contributions to a conference in Berlin, explicitly place the idea of Europe in the foreground, a concept which is reflected in Zweig's life and work and is examined here on various levels.
