This critical edition presents the work of Benjamin Constant, author, religious historian and political thinker, in all its uniqueness and diversity. It includes the author's voluminous correspondence. The Collected Works comprise two series, the first containing his works, the second his correspondence. Both series are arranged chronologically. Each volume includes chronological surveys, surveys, a bibliography and an index.
The 285 letters contained in this volume of the Correspondance générale date from the years following Constant's exclusion from the Tribunal. They reflect his work on religious issues, his dreams of literary success, and his travels in France, Germany, and Switzerland. In addition, they provide an impression of political life at the beginning of the Napoleonic empire and the emotional vicissitudes undergone by their author.
Der gebürtige Lausanner Benjamin Constant (1767-1830) stand nach einer ausgesuchten Erziehung in Brüssel, Oxford und Edinburgh zunächst in braunschweigischen Hofdiensten. In Paris begeisterte er sich für die Revolution und wurde französischer Staatsbürger. Jahrelang mit Madame de Stael liiert, teilte er mit ihr, als Napoleon sie 1802 verbannte, das Exil in Deutschland und in Coppet am Genfersee. 1819 ließ er sich als liberaler Abgeordneter und 1830 als Präsident des Staatsrats unter dem Bürgerkönig Louis Philippe wählen.
