Description
(Text)
Being devoted to early childhood stuttering and developmental speech disfluency, and based on original research, this monograph is the first of this kind in Europe. The research is based on a revolutionary thesis which assumes that the essence of both disorders consists in speech disfluency (both natural and pathological), as well as individual, social, positive or negative reactions to it. The Interview with the Mother and The Reactions to Speech Disfluency Scale are the two tools developed to test the thesis. The monograph discusses methods of differentiating between early childhood stuttering and developmental speech disfluency, and stresses the importance of combining linguistic, biological, psychosocial and developmental criteria in differential diagnosis. Unprecedentedly, the book offers description of type, severity and location of speech disfluency symptoms in a Slavic language, determines the relationship between a child's speech disfluency and their parents' and teachers' reactions as well as points to how these are conditioned by personality, emotional intelligence and style of coping with stress.
