This is the first critical edition and generally available translation of the short allegorical comedy Cosmarchia by Jacob Bidermann, the best-known Jesuit dramatist. Adapting a parable from Barlaam and Joasaph , Bidermann urges holy war aginst the deceitfulness of worldly life.

Contents: The innocent dupe, Promethes, who is unwittingly crowned king for a year instead of permanently, as he at first believes, is disillusioned in time to turn the tables on his fraudulent subjects. A short introduction in English precedes the Latin text and English translation in this edition, which also includes a detailed commentary.
