Slawomir Mrozek, geboren 1930 in Borzecin bei Krakau, studierte Architektur, Kunstgeschichte und Orientalistik. In Polen war er zunächst als Karikaturist erfolgreich, bevor er als Schriftsteller in Erscheinung trat. 1957 erschien sein erstes Buch mit satirischen Erzählungen. Es folgten seine Stücke (darunter 'Tango', 'Emigranten', 'Polizei', 'Striptease'), mit denen er Weltruhm erlangte. In Deutschland gehören sie zu den meistgespielten Theaterstücken überhaupt. 1962 verließ er Polen und beantragte 1968, als Reaktion auf die Niederschlagung des Prager Frühlings, in Frankreich politisches Asyl. Nach langen Jahren in Paris und später in Mexiko kehrte er 1996 in seine Heimatstadt Krakau zurück. Die letzten Jahre lebte er in Nizza, wo er 2013 verstarb.
