Wilhelm Grosz (1894-1939), whose estate has been housed at the Exile Art Center of the mdw - University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna since 2018, performed in the grand concert halls of Vienna, the vibrant Berlin of the 1920s, and later in exile in London and New York. Over the course of his career, Grosz moved between the modernist aesthetics of Neue Sachlichkeit, early jazz influences in art music, and popular music. Political upheavals forced him into exile in 1933, where he continued his career in popular music, composing hits such as Isle of Capri. Drawing on his correspondence with his long-standing publisher, the Wiener Universal Edition, and entries from Arthur Schnitzler's diary, this publication provides a vivid account of Grosz's artistic networks, the debates of his time, and the multifaceted scope of his oeuvre-from his 'serious' music to international popular successes in exile. Katharina Gross, MEd wurde 1996 in Wien geboren und wuchs in einer musikbegeisterten Familie auf. Nach ihrer Matura studierte sie Musikerziehung an der mdw - Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien sowie Geschichte und politische Bildung an der Universität Wien, das sie 2024 abschloss. Durch ein Seminar am Exilarte - Zentrum für verfolgte Musik bei Gerold Gruber, Michael Haas und Ulrike Anton wurde ihr Interesse für das Wien des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts und für die durch die Gräuel der Nationalsozialisten vielfach vergessenen oder verdrängten Künstler*innenbiografien geweckt. Bereits in ihrer Masterarbeit widmete sie sich dem Wiener Komponisten Wilhelm Grosz. Gerold Gruber ist seit Jahrzehnten als Dozent für Musikwissenschaft an der mdw - Universität für Musik und darstellende Musik Wien tätig und hat sich in dieser Eigenschaft intensiv mit dem Leben und Werk von Arnold Schönberg auseinandergesetzt. 2002 veröffentlichte er die "Schönberg-Interpretationen", ein grundlegendes Handbuch der Beschäftigung mit dem Komponisten und seinem Oeuvre, danach initiierte er die Gesamtausgabe der Schriften Schönbergs. Sein Interesse an der Zeit und am Umfeld brachte ihn 2006 zur Gründung des Vereins exil.arte, welcher sich zum Ziel gesetzt hat, von den Nationalsozialist:innen vertriebene, verfemte und ermordete Komponist:innen und Musiker:innen wieder eine Stimme zu geben und der Öffentlichkeit zu präsentieren. 2016 wurde der Verein als Forschungszentrum in die mdw aufgenommen.
