Full Description

Josiah Royce gehört zweifelsohne zu den interessantesten Denkern der klassischen amerikanischen Philosophie im Übergang vom 19. zum 20. Jahrhundert. Sein Werk erstreckt sich über eine große Bandbreite an Themen, von der Psychologie über sozialphilosophische Fragen bis hin zur Metaphysik. Dabei entwickelt Royce im Umfeld von Denkern wie William James oder Charles Sanders Peirce eine Konzeption des Pragmatismus, die er selbst als "absolute pragmatism" bezeichnet, und die um eine Theorie der Gemeinschaft kreist. Die Beiträge des Sammelbandes greifen diese pragmatistische Stoßrichtung seines Werkes auf und diskutieren sie in unterschiedlichen Perspektiven. Gefragt wird u.a. nach Royces Verhältnis zum deutschen Idealismus, nach der Grundlegung seiner Ethik sowie nach seiner philosophischen Gotteslehre und Religionsphilosophie. Dabei kommen durchaus divergierende Einschätzungen seiner Philosophie zum Vorschein, die je für sich von der bleibenden Aktualität seines Denkens für unsere Gegenwart zeugen.
