In deutschsprachigen Ländern wurde die Rolle des Diakonats stark vom Bild der Diakonie aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, als Dienst an den Armen, beeinflusst. So wichtig die sozialen Initiativen, die aus diesem Ansatz entstanden sind, auch gewesen sind, muss man, um Diakone und diakonia in der frühen Kirche richtig zu verstehen, Quellenforschung betreiben. Für diesen Band, der sich auf die ersten beiden Jahrhunderte des Christentums konzentriert, haben Wissenschaftler mit verschiedenen Hintergründen die Verwendung von diakonos und verwandten Wörtern im Neuen Testament und außer-biblischen Quellen, sowohl christlichen als auch anderen, hinterfragt. Diese Texte offenbaren, was Diakone eigentlich taten und helfen dadurch, die Vergangenheit zu verstehen und geben Führung für die Gegenwart, vor allem in ökumenischen Debatten zum Leitung in der Kirche.
