Hoffnung ist ein wichtiges, aber äußerst kontroverses menschliches Phänomen. Für manche ist sie Pandoras schlimmstes Übel, für andere ein göttliches Geschenk und eine der höchsten menschlichen Tugenden. Sie ist nicht greifbar, aber dennoch scheint sie im täglichen Leben allgegenwärtig zu sein. Das Christentum als umfassende Praxis der Hoffnung ist ohne selbige nicht vorstellbar: Christen glauben nicht an Dogmen, sondern praktizieren Hoffnung. In anderen Religionen ist das Thema Hoffnung beinahe nicht vorhanden oder wird sogar kritisch hinterfragt oder sogar abgelehnt. Vor etwa einem halben Jahrhundert konzentrierten sich die philosophische und die theologische Forschung auf das Thema Hoffnung. In den letzten Jahren hat sich die Debatte jedoch in Richtung positiver Psychologie und Psychotherapie, utopischer Studien und kultureller Anthropologie, Politik und Ökonomie verschoben. Dies eröffnet interessante neue Perspektiven.
