Die Autoren dieses Bandes legen hiermit die gründlichste Studie der Figuren und der Charakterisierung im vierten Evangelium vor, die bisher veröffentlicht wurde. Die Beiträger erstellen anhand von zahlreichen unterschiedlichen Ansätzen zweiundsechzig Abhandlungen, die sich auf die Figuren und die Eigenschaften von Personengruppen im Johannesevangelium beziehen. Darunter finden sich sehr detaillierte Untersuchungen, die einen neuen Blick auf Figuren gewähren, die eine Hauptrolle im Evangelium spielen (z.B. Petrus, Maria Magdalena, etc.), aber auch Studien von Figuren, die bisher nie im Fokus der narrativen Analyse standen und die in Kommentaren oftmals als unwichtig abgetan wurden (z.B. der Junge mit den Gerstenbroten und dem Fisch, die Eltern des blind geborenen Mannes, etc.). Offenkundig stehen die Figuren im Johannesevangelium im Schatten des Protagonisten - Jesus. In diesem Band treten sie jedoch ins Licht.
