Was bedeutet es, wenn man behauptet, daß Gott anwesend oder abwesend sei? Für Juden, Christen und Moslems ist Gott keine bloße Schlußfolgerung, kein abwesendes Wesen, von dem man nur schwache Spuren in unserer Welt entdecken kann. Im Gegenteil, Gott ist gegenwärtige Realität, tatsächlich die präsenteste aller Realitäten. Allerdings kann der Glaube an Gottes Gegenwärtigkeit nicht umhin, die weit verbreiteten Erfahrungen der Abwesenheit Gottes zur Kenntnis zu nehmen. Es macht auch wenig Sinn, von Gottes Abwesenheit zu sprechen, wenn diese nicht von Gottes Nicht-Gegenwärtigkeit oder Nicht-Existenz unterschieden werden kann. Wie also ist der Sinn von Gottes Anwesenheit und Abwesenheit im religiösen und alltäglichen Leben zu verstehen? Dies untersuchen die Studien des vorliegenden Bandes in den biblischen Traditionen, in der jüdischen und christlichen Theologie und Philosophie sowie in der gegenwärtigen Religionsphilosophie.
