This book examines a period of roughly 400 years during which the entire Fertile Crescent was united under a single imperial framework—first Assyrian, then Babylonian and Persian. It offers a detailed historical overview of the relationships between the nomads/Arabs and both the great empires and the settled populations of the region during the ninth to fourth centuries BC. Its distinctive contribution lies in integrating fixed geographical data with economic, political, and social developments.

The discussions draw on a broad array of both literary and non-literary sources, including the Bible, Akkadian, North and South Arabian inscriptions, as well as Aramaic and Greek texts.
