Die Arbeit untersucht die Auseinandersetzungen multiperspektivisch und diskutiert, wie sich der häusliche Dienst in Österreich bis zum Anschluss an das nationalsozialistische Dt. Reich verändert hat. Richter s book [ ] offers an original and comprehensive inquiry that makes an important contribution to the history of work, gender history, and the gendered history of work, expanding the current research on the subject. She shows that the production of the modern concept of work implied that skilled male workers became the epitome of the working population, whereas women s activities were increasingly not considered real work. On the one hand, socio-political interventions contributed to bringing domestic service closer to the dominant forms of work represented by paid (extra-domestic) employment. On the other, the supposed peculiarities of domestic service/work provided the justification for the disadvantageous treatment of (mainly female) domestic workers compared to other (mainly male) workers.
