This book seeks to offer a formal account of a functional analysis of elements of English. With respect to corpus linguistics, the set-theoretical model used generates categories which may be searched for in corpora; but it is not dependent on such sources for the distinctions it makes. The model proposed has considerable potential for further development:

It provides a means of formalizing some of the insights of functional grammars. For example, it leads naturally to an account of four different kinds of negation.
It predicts new categories and some sensitive distinctions which may be searched for in data.
It offers a formal means for expressing an integrated analysis of intonation and grammar in English.
It presents a computable method of analysing subtle distinctions of attitude as conveyed in English.
It is in principle applicable to any natural language.
