Die alphabetisch geordneten Namenartikel geben Auskunft über die Bedeutung (Etymologie), den Gebrauch und die Zulässigkeit sowie die korrekte Aussprache und Schreibweise des jeweiligen Vornamens, nennen Namenspatrone und verzeichnen einschlägige Literatur.

The Historical Dictionary of German First Names is the first dictionary of its kind to register the occurrence and spread of nearly every first name given in the German-speaking world since 1400 using numerous examples from published and unpublished sources. The entry for each name is arranged alphabetically and includes information on its meaning (etymology), its use and admissibility, together with the correct pronunciation and spelling of the name; in addition, it gives the patron saints and details of relevant literature.
