The author argues that the impact of Generative Artificial Intelligence on the language industry is so profound that a new turn in translation and interpreting theory is imminent. This paradigmatic shift, labelled the GenAI turn, goes beyond the mere technological advancement of computer-assisted translation and requires a reassessment of agency, in particular the role of the human in translation and interpreting.

Lukasz Bogucki is Full Professor of English Linguistics and Head of the Department of Translation Studies in the Institute of English Studies at the University of Lodz, Poland. He has published extensively on the theory of audiovisual and computer-assisted translation.
