Description

The main and first objective of this well-illustrated open access book is to introduce, define and explain common terms and concepts in earthquake and mine seismology. In seismology diverse fields, ranging from mathematics, classical mechanics, geology, rock and fracture mechanics to statistical physics with their specific jargon and terminology are brought together. Therefore, the language of earthquake and mine seismologists includes terms which may not be familiar to many geotechnical and mining engineers. For example, the proliferation of different earthquake magnitude scales has caused confusion about even this presumably simple concept and statistical physics brought in a plethora of new terms into the seismological parlance.  The second aim of this volume is to clarify some of the misconceptions, in particular related to the analysis and interpretation of mining related seismicity and to seismic hazard assessment for mines. As third aim the book stresses the need for testing the quality and integrity of the data before any analysis and assessment is attempted, the importance of quantifying observations and estimating the associated uncertainties. This book is primarily intended for mine seismologists and for mine geotechnical engineers who are, or plan to become, involved in advising mining companies on how to manage the seismic rock mass response to mining. The book will also be of interested to mining and geotechnical engineering students. Chapter 1. Preliminaries.- Chapter 2. Seismic Sources in Rock.- Chapter 3. Monitoring Rock Mass Stability.- Chapter 4.  Size Distribution and Seismic Hazard.- Chapter 5. Time Distribution and Seismic Hazard.- Chapter 6. Ground Motion Hazard.

Aleksander J. Mendecki graduated with a PhD in Seismology from the Silesian University of Technology in Poland in 1981, where he also worked as an Assistant Professor. In 1985, he became the Head of the Seismology Department at the Anglo American Corporation in South Africa.  From 1991, he was appointed as the Managing Director and the Head of Research at ISS International Limited (ISSI) and in 1994, Dr. Mendecki also worked as the Managing Director of ISS Pacific (ISSP). In 2010, he founded the Institute of Mine Seismology in South Africa and in Australia, and with the acquisition of both ISSI and ISSP, he became their Chairman and Head of Research. His main areas of expertise are monitoring seismic rock mass response to mining, quantification of seismic sources and near-source ground motion, deterministic and probabilistic seismic hazard assessment in mines, and the application of quantitative seismology to rock mass stability. Dr. Mendecki is the editor and the main author of the book Seismic Monitoring in Mines published by Chapman & Hall, London, 1997 and the author of the book Mine Seismology Reference Book: Seismic Hazard published in 2016. He published a number of papers in International Journals and presented and published keynote lectures resulting from the International Symposia on Rockburst and Seismicity in Mines, Kingston, Canada, in 1993, in Krakow, Poland, in 1997, in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2000, and in Dalian, China, 2009 in St Petersburg, Russia, in 2012 and in Santiago de Chile, Chile in 2017.
