Dès les années 50, Beyrouth et le Liban ont été un véritable laboratoire de la modernité architecturale au Moyen-Orient, faisant appel aux plus grands architectes nationaux et internationaux. Les institutions et grandes entreprises libanaises se sont tournées vers le béton et des formes dites brutalistes, participant pleinement au renouveau de l'architecture mondiale.
Si le Liban a donné naissance à une floraison de bâtiments exemplaires de cette époque, cet ouvrage est une invitation à en découvrir plus d'une trentaine, souvent méconnus et admirablement saisis par le regard de Matthieu Salvaing.
Par leur sélection, les auteurs convient le lecteur à suivre leurs pas au coeur des différentes expériences modernistes qui ont traversé le Liban comme autant de témoignages d'une vision internationale et généreuse. Des commandes publiques, telle l'emblématique Foire internationale de Tripoli édifiée par Oscar Niemeyer ou le Ministère de la Défense d'André Wogenscky, aux villas privées comme celles réalisées par Henri Edde, en passant par l'immeuble Interdesign de Khalil Khoury, cet ouvrage est la célébration d'une histoire heureuse du Liban, ancrée dans la modernité et ouverte sur le monde.

From the 1950s, Beirut and Lebanon have been a veritable laboratory of architectural modernity in the Middle East, calling on the greatest national and international architects. Institutions and large Lebanese companies have turned to concrete and so-called brutalist forms, participating fully to the renewal of world architecture.
If Lebanon gave birth to a flowering of exemplary buildings of this period, this work is an invitation to discover more than thirty, often unknown and admirably captured by the gaze by Matthieu Salvaing.
By their selection, the authors invite the reader to follow in their footsteps at the heart of the various modernist experiences who crossed Lebanon as so many testimonies of an international and generous vision.
Public commissions, such as the emblematic Tripoli International Fair built by Oscar Niemeyer or the Ministry of Defense of André Wogenscky, with private villas such as those created by Henri Edde, passing by the Interdesign building of Khalil Khoury, this work is the celebration of a history happy with Lebanon, rooted in modernity and open to the world.
