'Gilbert of Chester'
tells the tale of the Fourth Crusade to the Holy Land, an adventure that leads
Gilbert, Knight of Chester, on a route through elation, disillusionment and
pain, to unexpected fulfillment. Alienated by his father's worldly ambitions for
him, Gilbert seeks a higher purpose with the Fourth Crusade, only to discover
his impotence and insignificance amid the chaos of war. As the Pope, Doge and
military leaders vye for dominance, Constantinople's entrance into the conflict
dooms the enterprise, but for Gilbert a personal catastrophe brings him within
reach of his true vocation.
