Full Description
Hugh Armstrong takes a post as land agent in a secluded Lancashire valley, hoping for a quiet life among its Quaker tenants-gentle, orderly, and far removed from the chaos of the Napoleonic wars. But peace proves elusive.
Held at gunpoint by escaped French prisoners, and shortly afterwards, led to a thawing corpse in the snow, Hugh is pulled into a mystery that threatens to upend the calm of the valley. In his search for answers, he finds unlikely allies in the Huttons, including the fiercely self-possessed Dorcas, who challenges what he thought he knew about women-and himself.
As Hugh conceals his own shame and troubles, he's drawn into the community's concern for all the prisoners held locally, Clouds Over Bowland is about faith, doubt, conscience, and the unexpected bonds that emerge in times of unrest.
