Full Description
This book unearths a hidden treasure from the golden age of Ottoman scholarship, an original Arabic commentary by Isma'il Anqarawi on the Light Verse of the Quran, presented here in English for the first time. A devoted follower of Rumi and Ibn 'Arabi, Anqarawi was a highly influential figure in the 17th-century Ottoman world. Although perhaps best known as a charismatic and beloved shaykh of the Sufi Mawlawi (Mevlevi) order, famous for his piety, Anqarawi was also renowned for his writings on Islamic law, theology, and philosophy. His Commentary, written in a distinctive interpretive style, reveals to the reader profound philosophical, theological and mystical insights into the famous and mysterious Light Verse. Bilal Kunar also provides a detailed account of Anqarawi's life and works, a comprehensive overview of the Commentary and comparison of its most salient features with al-Ghazali's celebrated work The Niche of Lights, and an annotated critical edition of the Arabic text.
