The development of bisphoshonates - synthetic analogues of pyrophosphate, a naturally occurring substance - represents a major therapeutic advance. By inhibiting bone resorption, they correct hypercalcaemia and hypercalcuria, reduce pain and the occurrence of fractures and, by consequence, improve quality of life.
