Full Description
Wales and the Borders are truly a land of magic, and one need not go too far to encounter the places associated with historical and legendary witches, charmers, wisefolk, conjurors, necromancers and other wielders of magic. This semi-encyclopedic field guide introduces readers to historical figures and legendary characters from every corner of Wales and the Borders. Figures such as Dr John Harries of Cwrt-y-Cadno, Wales' most famous dyn hysbys who conjured spirits, found lost cows, and punished thieves... all for a price. The legendary magicians John o' Kent, Robin Ddu Ddewin, and Davies Sirevan who built bridges with the Devil, rode demonic horses, and were often buried in Church walls after Doves and Ravens pecked at their hearts and lungs. Readers are invited to roam the market towns of the 18th and 19th centuries to meet wisewomen and astrologers who told fortunes, prescribed blessings, and frustrated the machinations of witches. We will run from monstrous gwrach and gwyll who are encountered in the darkest of mist and night, dwell under boulders devouring children, and emerge from bogland to terrify locals. Every corner of Wales has one or more of these magical figures, and readers are invited along to meet them!
