Full Description
Bourne writes a personal history from the bottom, up first focusing on his family's involvement in World War II, before his birth. Particular attention is given to his Aunt Esther, an aunt of African ancestry, who became part of the Bourne family-and the reason for his interest in Black British studies-during one of London's many Blitz episodes. Bourne recounts the war from his family's perspective, detailing migrations back and forth from Wales, the camaraderie that flourished in London as people sought safety during Nazi bombing campaigns, and the resilience of the era.
These stories create an emotive, contextualized, and vivid portrayal of a life. As a working-class, gay British man who grew up on Peckham High Street, Bourne dreamed of building a more inclusive and informed society, which is what Thursday's Child is a testament to.
