Full Description
In the year 1189, as the Third Crusade gathers force, Europe stands divided by faith, ambition, and pride. When the call to take the cross reaches the northern isles, William FitzCount, nephew to the King of Scotland, sees in it a chance to win honour and secure his family's name. At his side marches Roland Gifford, an older squire whose prospects are waning, and Fearchar "McTaggart" O'Beolan, a monk seeking redemption after years of penance at Scone Abbey.
Bound by circumstance and purpose, they join the great host of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa on its perilous overland march toward the Byzantine frontier. With them travels a band of young crossbowmen from Holland—and the daughter of a horse-leech who follows east, driven by forbidden love.
