Full Description
From its early origins in the paternal threat of castration, psychoanalysis took a felicitous nose dive into the realm of the maternal. An unfortunate, unintended consequence was the eclipse of the father's role in child development. While occasional works attest to the significance of paternal involvement, a broad and culturally anchored scrutiny of fathers' role has not been available. This book provides a start to filling this void, addressing the developmental, cultural and clinical dimensions of fatherhood. Not content with covering the traditional family constellations, there are forays into paradigmatic outliers with chapters that examine groups such as disabled fathers, gay fathers and adoptive fathers. The normative models of psychoanalytic theory are expanded by including culturally diverse fatherhood patterns in Latin American and African American family circumstances. With ample clinical material, this book enhances understanding and empathy on the clinicians' part toward the importance of father in psychic structuralization, dissolutions of maternal symbiotic bonds, burgeoning of the external reality oriented executive ego, and fostering competence, individuation and identity development. Overall the current volume is a deep, pragmatic and technically useful contribution for all clinicians in whose work with their clients, the father role appears in a meaningful way.
