Full Description
This monograph is addressed to scientists and engineers who deal with the chemical and environmental aspects of odours. The book aims to cover every aspect of smell and odour, from an in-depth description of the human olfaction system and the chemistry of fragrant substances to discussions of pollution and sewage-and-waste treatment. The book presents little-known theories, such as the theory of the relation of molecular structure with "olfactive activity". It should be useful to chemists (analytical, environmental, organic) working in laboratories.
Contents
Part 1 Odours and olfaction: anatomy-physiology and mechanisms of olfaction; psychophysical methods of evaluation in environmental studies; hedonic aspects of odours and odour pollution control; physical-chemical properties of odourous products-solubilization; olfactory communication and facets of odorousness; relationship between molecular structure and olfactory activities; synergy and inhibition in olfaction. Part 2 Odourous pollution and depollution: sources of volatile organic compounds and study of odourous pollution; metrology and sampling; treatment of odours by scrubbing and oxidation; treatments with gas-solid transfer-adsorption; biodeodorization; origin and elimination of tastes and odours in water treatment systems; odour elimination in wastewater treatment plants and sewerage networks. Part 3 Legal aspects: regulations concerning odours.
