This is a unique volume, as its attempt is to treat films as philosophy, rather than to speak of films only in relation to philosophy, thereby subjugating the film in question to pre-existing theories, be they psychoanalytic, feminist or cognitive. This volume seeks to develop for the first time the set of arguments and readings championed by those writers on film who believe that films can think; that they can, indeed, perhaps function as philosophy. Bringing together essays from some of the leading scholars in the field the book also features an interview with Stanley Cavell, in which he explains his most recent thinking on the topic.
