Full Description
Liverpool's position as the main trading port in the United Kingdom across the Atlantic in the eighteenth century saw the city become one of the largest and wealthiest in the country. During the next century, Liverpool's population grew rapidly as the city became a centre for trade, technology and commerce, attracting immigrants from all over the world, as well as Ireland and Wales. Surrounding towns such as Birkenhead, St Helens and Southport also thrived in this period and joined with Liverpool to form the county of Merseyside in 1974.
