Full Description

This illustrated history portrays one of England's finest counties. It provides a nostalgic look at Kent's past and highlights the special character of some of its most important historic sites. The photographs are taken from the Historic England Archive, a unique collection of over 12 million photographs, drawings, plans and documents covering England's archaeology, architecture, social and local history. Pictures date from the earliest days of photography to the present and cover subjects from Bronze Age burials and medieval churches to cinemas and seaside resorts. The county of Kent has played an important role in the history of England throughout its history from the Roman occupation onwards. Canterbury became the site of the first cathedral in the country and the Norman conquest also left its mark, not least the building of Dover Castle. Kent's coastal towns and ports were important for trading links and also the supply of warships, recognised by the founding of the Cinque Ports and the development of Chatham Dockyards. Also known as the 'Garden of England', Kent is famed for its fruit-growing and hop gardens as well as the countryside of the Weald and North Downs. Other major settlements grew around the mouth of Kent's major river, the Medway, and on the Isle of Thanet. The north of Kent and its London borders are the more industrialised areas of the county but in the east several coal mines operated in the last century in the Kent Coalfield.
