Full Description

Aquaculture Parasitology: A Global Synthesis for Finfish draws together, for the first time, detailed knowledge of key parasite groups with practical aspects of their presence in farmed finfish around the world. A diversity of environments is considered, ranging from countries in which aquaculture is still small scale, to those in which it is established as a large commercial enterprise. Aquaculture Parasitology provides theoretical and practical information for an international audience to meet the increasing need for knowledge of the threat posed by parasites to the rapidly growing aquaculture industry. Chapters have been written by a broad range of specialists, including many authors from countries that are often under-represented, who now present their scholarly perspectives to a broad international audience.

This book is organized around two main themes: parasites of economic importance in finfish aquaculture, and regional reviews. Nine chapters address the parasites: dinoflagellates, amoebae, flagellates, ciliates, microsporidia, myxozoa, monogenean, helminths (excluding monogenean), and crustaceans. These chapters include ecology, biology, diagnosis, host-parasite relationships and their impact, management, and future outlook. Seven chapters present regional reviews, addressing the specific manifestation of parasites in farmed fish according to geography: China, Asia (excluding China), Oceania, North America, Central and South America, Europe, and Africa. The regional chapters include regional geography, overview of finfish aquaculture, impact of current and emerging parasite diseases, management practices, infrastructure affecting fish health, special topics, and future outlook. To aid the reader's understanding, the text is supported by numerous illustrations, and a comprehensive glossary.

Aquaculture Parasitology is an essential resource for veterinarians, diagnosticians and researchers working with the aquaculture industry, and those involved in planning and regulation of its health aspects. This book will also be valuable for students, as it provides an intriguing introduction to parasites in finfish aquaculture.
