Full Description

This curious collection was assembled by Isaac Nathan (1790-1864) and published in 1829, five years after Byron's death in Greece. Nathan, destined by his parents to become a rabbi, studied Hebrew, German and Chaldean at Cambridge, but he had an aptitude for music which led to his being apprenticed to an Italian composer in London. He was introduced to Lord Byron in 1814, and the poet wrote lyrics for Nathan to set to music. Their publication as Hebrew Melodies in 1815 formed the foundation of Nathan's career as a composer, but in spite of patronage at court he was perpetually short of money, and this work, though popular, did not prevent poverty and, eventually, emigration to Australia in 1841. It consists of the text of the Hebrew Melodies, with an extensive and anecdotal commentary by Nathan, and of the 'Poetical Effusions, Letters, Anecdotes and Recollections of Lady Caroline Lamb'.
