First published in 1942, this volume presents the war diary of Major D. Barlone of the Free French Forces, formerly Captain of the Second North African Division. Translated into English by L. V. Cass, the diary offers a vivid portrait of a single French Unit from the mobilization in 1939 to the collapse of France in 1940 and the subsequent demobilization after the Armistice. Published at a time when the fate of France still hung in the balance, this book represents an important contemporaneous account of the first year of the war from the unique perspective of a Free French officer.
