Full Description

Excavations at the Austin Friary, Hull, Yorkshire, 1994 and 1999, Part 1, details the excavations of the Austin Friary in Hull, a house founded in 1316/17 and surrendered to the Crown in 1539.
With the excavations exposing the majority of the church, all the East Range, most of the West Range and almost all of the Garth, this volume highlights the exceptional survival of objects, both organic remains and structures. 260 articulated burials are detailed as well as the associated sepulchral remains, including 44 oak coffins, a significant assemblage of textile remains and a wealth of dress-accessories. The later era of the of the Austin Friary is explored, with the story of the conversion into a large secular holding with standing buildings as late as the 1790s through to the development of three public houses, of a Georgian Butchers' Shambles and a Victorian Market Hall set out. The story ends in 1941 when the whole area was extensively bombed and largely raised to the ground during the Hull Blitz.
This book is for researchers and archaeologists interested in the archaeology of medieval Britain as well as the role of Christianity in the Middle Ages.
