Full Description

Over recent decades, pro-competitive reforms in the civil aviation industry, particularly in air transport, have increased competition, reduced prices, and improved services for consumers. Although airports have also evolved, changes in this sector have been less pronounced. Nevertheless, airports face today growing competitive pressures and are less often seen as natural monopolies. Markets within airports, such as ground handling services, have become more competitive as well.In this context, the book explores the global shift towards pro-competitive regulation in the airport sector, with a particular focus on Brazil. It shows that, while important steps have been taken, efforts remain at an early stage and require stronger institutional arrangements to address all dimensions of airport regulation.Targeted at civil aviation regulators and policymakers, as well as competition professionals, the book calls for co-ordinated action between competition authorities and civil aviation bodies. A unified regulatory agenda, supported by proactive competition enforcement and advocacy, could embed competition principles more deeply into airport regulation, boosting efficiency and delivering real benefits to consumers.
