Beechholme, The Place to Be
Care, Cornwall, Cars and Careers
Beechholme covers a range of themes, some of which the reader is likely to identify with or will be curious to know more about. It starts with the author's childhood spent in care, particularly in a Surrey children's home with a rather notorious reputation: Beechholme. But there were 'escapes' to freedom with special holidays in Cornwall, a place with family roots since the early eighteenth century. But after a move to foster care in New Town Stevenage, what would the author, as a teenager and having left school, do? It involved a move to London, where, despite having no qualifications, he managed to secure a position as a trainee piano tuner-technician with famous store Harrods of Knightsbridge. He would much later enter further education as a mature student and become a teacher, but by that time his father was encountering something like a toxic blanket that hid the world from him. In time, he would no longer know that world at all, for he lived among strangers. He still knew his name and sort of his identifying label: Alzheimer's. But what to do? How best to look after the composer who could no longer recognize the difference between a knife and fork, let alone pick up a pencil and write? There are moments of intrigue and poignancy in the story, but humour too, along with some wonderful characters that bring a smile to the face or touch the reader in a special way.
