Full Description
A pipefitter is a tradesperson who installs, assembles, fabricates, maintains, and repairs mechanical piping systems. Piping can consist of copper, PVC, CPVC, polyethylene, and galvanized pipe, which is typically glued, soldered, or threaded. Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters learn on the job through an apprenticeship, but also go through licensing and accreditation. According to the Occupations Handbook, there are at least 950,000 pipefitting jobs in 2018. The pipefitting industry is expected to grow 21% from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations. Construction of buildings and the need for new septic and mechanical systems should drive demand for qualified workers.
