Full Description

This proceedings contains the papers presented at the Third International Conference on Watershed Management, which was held on December 11 through 14, 2001 at National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan. The conference was successful in meeting its objective of gathering water management experts from the United States, Japan, and Taiwan to discuss water supply and water pollution issues in a sustainable context. The issues are of critical importance not only to Taiwan, but countries throughout the Pacific Rim. More than twenty-five papers were presented by invited speakers on subjects such as new technologies for erosion and sediment control, non-point source and urban stormwater pollution reduction, and hazard mitigation. Facilitated round table discussions focused on sustainable watershed management strategies, debris flow, and river restoration. The conference concluded with a technical tour of Taiwan's Feitsui Reservoir and the surrounding watershed. The day-long tour focused on illustrating existing problems, highlighting successful solutions, and fostering dialogue among the participants. Both the round table discussions and technical tour included invited participants from academia, local and federal government, and the private sector. Although the conference was located in Taiwan, many papers focused on the commonality of problems and solutions between the United States and Taiwan and other papers focused on how to apply lessons learned in United States to problems elsewhere.
