Full Description
Though published originally in England in 1645, half a century later the "Marrow of Modern Divinity" kindled one of the most significant controversies in the Church of Scotland. In 1700 the "Marrow" had a profound influence on the ministry of Thomas Bostor, now widely seen as one of the most significant figures in the Reformed tradition, and he recommended it to others. It was reprinted in 1718, and although derived largely from the writings of Reformers and English Puritans, it was condemned as heresy by the General Assembly. This study traces the course of the controversy, and analyzes the theological issues involved.
