After the arrival of the railway and its many ancillary trades in 1846 the town developed fast, and even though it is no longer the pre-eminent railway town in the south-west, Newton Abbot continues to prosper, now appealing to tourists as well as residents.

Derek Beavis's affectionate look at his native town illustrates Newton Abbot's history with over 200 photographs, many of which are previously unpublished.
