Annabel Tarleton is being pushed towards marriage to wealthy Richard Hansen by her ambitious mother. At first she is attracted to him, but then she meets Paul Keifer and falls in love. However, the knowledge that he would not meet with her mother's approval drives a wedge between them. Vulnerable in her sorrow, Annabel is blackmailed into marrying Richard Hansen. But after several unhappy months as Richard's wife, Annabel meets Paul again, only to be found out by her husband. Pregnant and driven by her fear for herself and her unborn child she runs away.
