Full Description
The Invention of Prose investigates the extraordinary time in the Classical city of Athens when the genres of history, philosophy, rhetoric and science were first developed as disciplines. It looks at the cultural revolution that this new idea of prose betokens, and explores both how the different genres are formulated and what the implications of this new form of intellectual activity are for cultural history. The book is designed for a very broad audience, including undergraduates and schools. All Greek is translated, and there is a selective bibliography.
