Palgrave's intention in compiling his anthology in the 1860s was to collect the finest lyrical poems in the English language. This edition of the anthology, the first for 30 years, charts the progression of English verse. It includes a new section, added to the original work, consisting of post-World War II verse. This will introduce all of the significant contemporary practitioners of verse in Britain and Ireland - including Fleur Adcock, Carol Ann Duffy, Douglas Dunn, Gavin Ewart, Tony Harrison, Seamus Heaney, Sylvia Plath and Hugo Williams - to the book for the first time.
