Even though almost nothing is known about Amaru, his Amaru Shatakam is considered to be the best-known and highly regarded love poetry in the world of Sanskrit literature. This reputation has existed in its literary record since over a thousand years. These ancient lyrics give vivid glimpses of human love in quite a modern manner. The love they picture has physical, emotional as well as social aspects. It is delightful and painful, and felt by women as well as men. Each verse in the collection is sensitively drawn portrait of love, sometimes in separation and loss and at other times in desire and fulfilment.
