訳者のRoyall Tylerは、オーストラリア国立大学教授を経て、現在ハーバード大学で教鞭をとる日本文学研究者で、本訳書は長年の研究の結晶です。訳文は、原文に忠実を期してかつ、現代英語として読める清新なものとなっています。サイデンステッカー訳についてとかく指摘される、原文の文学的香りを重視するあまり、具体的意味内容が曖昧で、古拙風の英語になっているといった点をクリアし、物語の具体的な内容を正確に伝えることを重視しています。訳書にはかつてない詳細な注釈、平安朝の建物や習俗の図版が付される外、各章冒頭に登場人物リスト、章末に物語の梗概、また巻末に位階官職リストと全般的な語彙集を加え、平安朝文化になじみのない読者にも配慮しています。
