Molly's mother died when she was just a child and she helped her grief-stricken father look after their tiny home in their tight-knit Liverpool street. Lacking confidence, Molly's always felt in the shadow of her sister June, but as the Second World War breaks out, she sees a chance to do her bit.
Enlisting in the Women's Voluntary Service, Molly is terrified of what lies ahead, but she also meets Eddie and lives for the time they spend together. In their snatched moments when Eddie is on leave from the Navy, the two of them happily plan their future.
