" この企画は、そもそもはロンドンに滞在することが多かった私が、友だちでもあるSamantha Lierensさん(英文の執筆・監修を担当)たちと話しているうちに生まれたものでした。英語はある程度できるつもりだったけれど、ロンドンで日々生活をしていると、「え?」という言い回しがちょくちょく耳に飛び込んでくる。
たとえば""That's so cheesy!""。直訳すれば、「チーズくさ~い!」といったところで、「キザだったり、わざとらしかったりしてダサいこと」をおちょくる言い回しです。そう、ご想像のとおり、熟成が進んだチーズのようにコッテリした香りを放っている、ということ。クリエイティブさや新しさをことのほか大切にするロンドナー(Londoner)にとっては、最も言われたくない言葉のひとつなのです。
ロンドナーのフレーズには、おもしろい言い回しが多いのも特徴です。モンティ・パイソンやシェイクスピアの例を出すまでもなく、もともと言葉遊びが大好きな国民性。韻を踏んだり、ダジャレにしてみたり、わざと大げさな表現を使ったり。""Is the pope Catholic?""(21ページ)なんていうふざけたフレーズも、日常生活にちょっとしたおかしみを加えるのに活躍しているのです。とにかく実際、彼らと話しているとこういう言葉がポロポロ出てきて、飽きることがありません。
今回のフレーズを集めるにあたっては、ロンドンの""ごくごくフツー""の20~30代の人たちが使っている表現であることを念頭に置きました。これまでにもイギリス英語を扱った本は出されていますが、私の見るとこころではそのほとんどはお上品な優等生会話にとどまっています。でも、この本は違います。いまどきの、まさに「イキのいい」ロンドンのフレーズばかりです。ただし、それぞれのページにも書きましたが、イキのいい言葉であるほど、時と場所を選ぶもの。そして、だからこそシチュエーションにピッタリの表現が使えたときの快感もひとしおというもの。この本をじっくり読み込んで、イケてるロンドナーをめざしてください!
